alaska wilderness denali

One of the best ways to see and experience Alaska is on a wilderness vacation. It's a 'one of a kind adventure holiday' that allows you to get away from it all - with great sightseeing opportunities as well as activities like hiking, fishing, biking, canoeing, and more.

And of course, what better way to enjoy an Alaska wilderness vacation than to sit back, relax, and enjoy the midnight sun. This kind of holiday is an excellent choice for an Alaska family adventure vacation!

Alaska Wilderness Vacation Spots - Where to Go

Alaska really defines what the word wilderness means - it's 'a large region preserved in its natural condition with dense forests and vegetation.'

Wilderness activities like hiking, cycling, Alaska whitewater rafting, and fishing can be done in both of Denali's Parks.

You can also take an Alaska paddling vacation in the southern part of the state where there are lots of areas to base yourself to enjoy the great outdoors.

Here are our top 5 Alaska wilderness vacation spots:

1. Denali National and State Park: If you're planning on visiting Alaska in the summer - Denali's Parks are the place to go. You'll find all sorts of wildlife as well as glacier-fed rivers, stunning mountain peaks, and awe -inspiring tundra! For the best wilderness experience try staying close to the park entrance or better yet - inside the park at Kantishna. There are a number of fantastic lodges and accommodations to choose from that offer wilderness treks and other outdoor activities!

2. Seward: You can take glacier cruises, go kayaking or rafting, mountain climbing, as well as take a sled dog ride and tour. One of the best wilderness getaways in Alaska is to stay out at Fox Island in the middle of Resurrection Bay. The Kenai Fjords Wilderness Lodge is highly recommended.

3. Kennicott Glacier Lodge: Located in the middle of Wrangell-St.Elias National Park, this lodge is the perfect retreat for adventure seekers and outdoor enthusiasts. You'll find excellent hiking and mountain biking between the 2 local ghost towns of McCarthy and Kennicott. Whitewater rafting is close as well!

4. Cordova: You'll have to either fly or ferry in to this small but spectacular wilderness town. There are at least 18 B&B's to choose from in as well as a handful of hotels. Some of the roads that lead out of town will take you to unforgettable glaciers with activities that include guided hiking, boating, and flight seeing.

5. Kodiak Island: This is a fantastic wilderness getaway with hiking trails and lots of kayaking. Although you need to either fly or ferry in, there are over 100 miles of roadways to explore that lead to isolated coastal areas, coves, and scenic views of breathtaking mountain vistas.

How Much is an Alaska Wilderness Vacation

Because Alaska is so large, you'll never have a problem finding that perfect piece of wilderness that defines the area. But one thing to keep in mind when considering a wilderness vacation in Alaska - is the price.

Look at our Alaska Adventure Vacation Cabins Page for lodging locations in wilderness settings!

If you're looking to get away from it all by finding accommodation or lodging in that "out of the way place" - you're going to have to pay for it!

A typical example of this - is the choices you have around Denali National Park. If you want to stay outside of the Park, it will not only be cheaper, but you'll also have a lot of different adventure options and trips to choose from.

If you'd like to stay inside the Park in the area of Kantishna, you'll be quite isolated, but it will also cost you about $200 more per night.

Really, accommodation costs in Alaska are like many other destinations that we've been to around the world. You get what you pay for! The good news is that some lodges and cabins offer all-inclusive pricing which provide you with adventure activities, meals, and transportation.

Have a Fantastic and Adventurous Alaska Wilderness Vacation!
