Australia is a place that we love going to over and over again! Believe it or not, we have traveled down under over 15 different times, always looking for new adventures. There is so much to do here, that it's hard to know where to begin.

One of the best things about Australia adventure travel is that there are a number of choice destinations within the country to choose from, depending on what type of vacation experience you are looking for. Looking for total isolation? Then, a trip to the Australian Outback is one place you don't want to miss!

How about beautiful coastal waters and beaches? Australia has some of the best beaches in the southern hemisphere, not to mention, world-class diving and snorkeling on the Great Barrier Reef!

Bushwalking in Tasmania, surfing in New South Wales, cycling in Queensland, and exploring stunning National Parks in the Northern Territory - we've done it all!

Below are some of our top recommendations for an ultimate adventure vacation in Australia:

Australia Adventure Travel - Unforgettable Things to See and Do

Ayers Rock (Uluru) - Ayers Rock Tour Information Travel to this area of Australia is an adventure that should be done sooner than later. There has been speculation that Aboriginal control of this area may someday prevent Rock climbs - so plan on visiting while the opportunity still exists!

We've climbed Uluru on two different trips to Oz, and it's something that we highly recommend! The landscape in and around this area is unbelievable! Australians call this the red center, and that’s absolutely what it is!

The Olgas - Kata Tjuta These rock formations are located 30 kilometers west of Ayers Rock and are definitely worth seeing! There is an excellent and not too difficult 7.5 km walking trail in and around Mt Olga that we really enjoyed. But make sure to take a lot of water!

Great Barrier Reef! Great Barrier Reef Tour Information There are many popular day cruises that you can take from Cairns out to the reef. This is an adventure that can be enjoyed by young and old, and one that you won't soon forget!

We enjoyed traveling out from Cairns on a catamaran, stopping at various areas along the reef for snorkeling and scuba diving. Some trips will take you out to one of the many spectacular islands scattered around the reef.

Imagine - snorkeling and scuba-diving among amazing tropical fish and coral with time to soak up the sun on a beautiful remote island beach, all in one day!

Kakadu National Park - Like other areas throughout the Northern Territory, Kakadu is a bushwalker's delight! The park contains a stunning variety of scenic highlights, as well as an abundance of wildlife native to Australia.

We enjoyed hiking some of the marked trails within the park, which range from 1 to 13 kilometers in length. We went on a guided bushwalk that really helped us to appreciate not only the beauty of this area, but also the dangers.

It is possible to hike through some of the more remote trails, but you are required to contact the local park ranger or warden before venturing out!

Tasmania - Australia adventure travel includes not only fun-filled outdoor activities but also experiencing beautiful wilderness areas! Most of the National Parks in this island state have been listed as World Heritage regions.

We loved the Cradle Mountain - Lake St Clair area, with it's spectacular gorges and magnificent mountain peaks. There are literally hundreds of day-walk trails here to enjoy, both in Cradle Valley and Cynthia Bay.

If you prefer white-sand beaches and secluded coves, then we highly recommend the bushwalks in Freycinet National Park. This place is fantastic, with absolutely stunning views of Wineglass Bay!

In and around Sydney - If arriving from overseas, it's likely that your first point of entry will be Sydney. This dynamic city is an excellent starting point to begin your Australia adventure vacation.

One new adventure that the whole family can enjoy is climbing the Sydney Harbour Bridge. An experience you'll never forget, with breathtaking views of one of the most beautiful cities in the world!

A short distance from Sydney is the Blue Mountains, with fantastic walking trails and scenic lookouts. Several companies in this area offer different adventure activities, including rock climbing and caving.

Best Time To Travel to Australia

Australia adventure travel can be enjoyed year-round! However, since Australia is a large country, it is advisable to plan your adventure vacation according to the area you wish to see and time of year you want to go.

Southern Australia : The southern states of Australia are quite popular in the summer months. Travelling in New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania during November - February, you'll find warm weather and lots of sunshine great for experiencing the outdoors.

Northern Australia : June - August is the best time to visit the top end. Places like North Queensland and the Northern Territory. The extreme humidity and temperature drop to a more acceptable level which makes getting out and about much more enjoyable!

If you're trying to pack multiple adventures into a single trip, then the best time to go is in the spring and autumn months (October and November / April and May).

Here's the best time to go to the following areas:

  • Northern Territory and Kakadu - May through September

  • Ayers Rock and The Olgas - April through November

  • Tasmania - November through March

  • Queensland and the Great Barrier Reef - April through December

  • Western Australia - August through December
