Experience Prince Edward Island While Biking The Confederation Trail
Biking the Confederation Trail on a Canada Cycling Vacation
Prince Edward Island may be small, but it's packed with spectacular sights and sounds! And the best way to take it all in, is by cycling through the province on two wheels.
Biking the Confederation Trail takes you into wetlands, hardwood groves, and quaint little villages. What we like about doing an excursion like this, is that it's easy to plan on your own.
If time is short, you can pedal through the island in about three days. If you have more time, you can opt to stay longer in that little village you like, or check out one of the many attractions that PEI has to offer.
Sights like the red cliffs of Cavendish, or the Greenwich Dunes in Prince Edward Island National Park!
The Confederation Trail - What to Expect
The Confederation Trail was once the Canadian National Rail Line that connected all of the island's small villages. But by 2001, all the train tracks were pulled up and resurfaced with crushed gravel, creating a beautiful path for cyclists and walkers from one end of the island to the other.
It begins on the island's west side, in Tignish, and stretches for 280 kilometres to the eastern side, ending at Elmira.
The highest point on the island is only 400 feet above sea level, so it is very easy for even novice cyclists to enjoy themselves. The trail winds through many villages and hills making for a truly remarkable outdoor adventure!
Tignish is a beautiful Irish community with towering spires and plenty of red brick. The village of Summerside features many stunning old homes and a rich history.
Further along the Confederation Trail is Kensington, which offers stunning architecture, and is close to PEI's fabulous North Shore. St. Peter's offers panoramic views of the Gulf of St. Lawrence, and is close to the white sand beaches of Greenwich.
Biking Vacation - Best Time to Go
Anytime during the summer months is great for exploring Prince Edward Island's Confederation Trail.
One of the best times to go is in September, as this is when the summer crowds thin out and you can enjoy miles of trail with breath-taking autumn scenery all to yourself!
You can see it all here, everything from coastal marshes with abundant wildlife, to agriclutural fields, including outstanding rivers and bays leading to the Gulf of St. Lawerence!
Rentals and Tour Options - Places to Stay
If you're a hardcore cycling enthusiast, no doubt you'll have your own bike. But if you decide that you don't want to travel with it - not to worry - there are numerous places to rent throughout the island.
A number of tour operators not only rent bicycles, but can also plan a variety of cycling excursions for all ages and abilities.
Some popular itineraries include The Cabot Loop and also The Tyne Valley. Average length is anywhere betwwen 32 - 55 kilometers!
There are plenty of B&B's, little country inns and motels to choose from when biking the Confederation Trail. There are also a number of campgrounds to select from, including inexpensive cabins.
Accommodation is generally cheaper in the fall and winter months, and more expensive in the summer season.
Biking the Confederation Trail provides you with a truly unique perspective of Prince Edward Island. No matter what your ability may be, PEI is the ultimate destination for cycling and adventure enthusiasts alike.
