It seems like everyone at one time or another plans a vacation in sunny California. It's a great destination with tons of choices - Disneyland, Hollywood, beautiful San Francisco, Palm Springs, San Diego....the list goes on!
California is also one of the top places to experience adventure! We take at least two California adventure vacation trips each year!
Not only have we discovered some unforgettable activities and places, but we've also stumbled across some fantastic 'out of the way' spots that aren’t in a lot of tourist brochures.

California Adventure Vacation Ideas and Spots
California National Parks
- Discover the natural beauty of California in Parks like Yosemite,
Death Valley
and
Joshua Tree National Park!
By getting out of the big urban areas and cities, you'll see California like you've never seen it before.
National Parks in California offer some of the best hiking and wildlife viewing in the United States. For example, Yosemite has some of the best walking paths around on both the valley floor as well as up in the higher terrain.
California's National Parks are also great places to experience rafting and kayaking. And there are also numerous cycling paths to enjoy with a variety of terrain!
Northern California -
Northern California is famous for its spectacular coastline scenery and its abundant supply of year round adventure activities! Try kayaking in Tomales Bay, or mountain biking on Mount Tamalpais.
On the Monterey Peninsula you'll find some of the best sections for hiking and camping along California's rugged coast. And a northern California adventure vacation wouldn’t be complete without exploring some of the vast wilderness areas in High Sierra country!
San Francisco and Bay Area -
There are no less than 14 State Parks located within 40 miles from the greater San Francisco area! Some parks are located right on the coast and offer some excellent hiking and biking trails.
Whale watching is also extremely popular in the Bay area, with cruises scheduled throughout the year. Half Moon Bay offers number of inexpensive half-day whale watching tours.
Not to be missed while in the Bay Area are some outstanding surfing locations! Rockaway Beach and Half Moon Bay both provide challenging surf!
Southern California -
When you think of southern California, you probably think about sunny weather and hitting the beach! And thousands of people do!
An adventure vacation in southern California is all about outdoor activities, and Los Angeles and San Diego as well as every place in between doesn’t disappoint. In fact, it’s the perfect place for families to spend time together, with a number of adventure choices for all ages!
California Desert -
Palm Springs is a good starting point to explore some of California's vast desert! If you really want to get away from it all and have a bit of fun at the same time, we suggest taking a jeep tour or a bike tour through the heart of the San Andreas Fault zone.
