The Best Adventure Locations for a Costa Rica Canopy Tour
Experience the Rainforest on a Thrilling Costa Rica Canopy Tour
Without a doubt, one of the top adventure activities in Costa Rica is taking a Canopy tour!
Canopy tours allow you the opportunity to explore wildlife and enjoy the natural habitat indigenous to the area, all without disturbing any of the animal or plant life.
There is no better way to enjoy the wonders of Costa Rica's rainforest than to take one of the many canopy tours offered throughout the country.
Costa Rica leads the way in ecotourism - and it's easy to see why. With almost a third of the country covered by rainforests, the government has taken positive measures to preserve and protect these endangered areas.
Below we list some of the most popular areas to experience a fun filled Costa Rica canopy tour:
- Monteverde
- Arenal Volcano
- Selvatura Park
- Mahogany Park
Monteverde Cloud Forest
We recommend using the
Original Canopy Tour
company. They're an excellent choice. This company was the first to start tours like these. They have the highest safety standards and use only the finest quality equipment.
The tour is situated in a private reserve located close to Santa Elena. This is a great area to stay in - especially if you plan on taking in Arenal as well!
Guided hikes along with thrilling zip-line action makes this tour tops with families as well. Children over the age of 6 can participate, and it's something they'll never forget!
Arenal Volcano
There's a lot of ways to enjoy this area on a number of different canopy tours.
For those who prefer an adventure in a somewhat less active environment, why not try the
Sky Tram
with breathtaking views of Arenal's south face.
With a guide by your side, the tram can be stopped at any time along the way so that you can observe some of the animals and birds in the area.
Once you're at the top, you can relax and enjoy the spectacular view from the observation deck. Then, you can either take the Sky Tram back down, or hike downhill on a variety of 'easy to do' trails!
The most exhilarating option from this point though, is to take the Sky Trek Canopy Tour. This is where the real adventure begins! High above, in the tree tops, you can zig zag your way back down to the base using 18 different cables spanning at least 2 kilometres!
The tour lasts about 2 hours, and is a good value at around $45 for adults and $25 for children.
Selvatura Park
The canopy tour here is different than the one around Arenal. Here you can zip through almost 3 kilometres of line using 15 different cables and 18 platforms. Also, instead of being above the tree line, this canopy tour takes you through the rainforest.
If you're willing to take the adventure one step further - you might try the optional Tarzan Swing. Attach yourself to a secure rope and literally throw yourself off a platform!
Selvatura Park also contains a number of excellent tree top bridges. There's almost 2 miles of walkways to explore high above the forest, with plenty of opportunity to see fauna, flora, and wildlife!
Mahogany Park
If you're only going to be in the San Jose area, an excellent option is Mahogany Park. With its close proximity (1.5 hrs) to the city, it's the perfect location for adventure travelers to experience the rainforest and see some wildlife!
The 'Original Canopy Tour' operates an extremely popular tour here. It last about 2 hours and includes no less than 9 zip lines and 11 platforms.
Because Mahogany Park is close to San Jose and the port of Puntarenas, the tours tend to book up! It's also important to note that if you are visiting the area by cruise ship - the cruise lines impose higher restrictions on who may experience the thrills of a canopy tour.
For example, although the minimum age requirement may be 5 years to participate with a canopy tour company, the cruise line imposes a minimum age of 12.
Always check with the tour operator ahead of time so that there are no misunderstandings.
Day trips out to Mahogany are available from most San Jose hotels, and it's advisable to book a few days in advance.
Prices for tours from San Jose are about $75 per person. If you have your own transportation, the cost is $45 for adults and $25 for children.
Costa Rica Canopy Tours - What to Expect
A Costa Rica canopy tour can be a little scary at first, but it's definitely worth the effort. After all, it's an adventure! Minimum physical requirement is needed. In fact, having the courage and will to experience the rainforest may be your biggest obstacle.
Scared of heights? It can be a little unnerving at first, but you can be sure that you're probably not the only one who has felt uneasy about this type of adventure. Prepare yourself mentally!
Here are some important necessities to take with you on a Costa Rica canopy tour:
- Camera
- Comfortable clothing
- Closed toe shoes or strap on sandals
- Shorts or long pants
- Light rain gear in the rainy season
- Insect repellent
Most Costa Rica canopy tours operate in the rain, so if you are booked in, remember that you may get a little wet and dirty. This is so especially if your cable line takes you through the forest instead of over top it.
Have fun on your next visit to Costa Rica, and enjoy a bird's eye view of the rainforest in one of the most 'eco friendly' and thrilling ways to experience this beautiful country!
