The Olgas! - Adventure Trails and Tours Around Kata Tjuta
Discover Kata Tjuta Walking Trails - Our Guide to Adventure Hikes and Tours at The Olgas
The Olgas (Kata Tjuta) are located about 30 kilometres west of
Ayers Rock.
The area offers some spectacular hiking and walking trails that showcase the many "heads" that make up this unusual collection of rounded domes.
There are two main walks worth hiking that provide stunning views of these rock formations up close.
- The Valley of the Winds
- Walpa Gorge Trail
You can also venture off the main trails and explore on your own - but be careful as some areas are very rocky, steep and narrow!
Kata Tjuta - The Valley of the Winds
This 7.5 kilometre trail circles through several scenic gorges and is not that hard to traverse! In fact, it's easy to navigate!
Having been out here on two different occasions - we've easily completed this trek in about 2 - 3 hours. Excellent views can be had from two lookout points (Karu and Karingana) along the trail.
Preparation, of course, is important for hiking this trail! Whether you're part of a tour group or on your own, make sure you have plenty of water to drink!
If the idea of carrying around 5 or 6 litres of water in your backpack is not appealing, we suggest taking along some fruit - like oranges. We found that they provide a good source of hydration, and are a refreshing compliment to H2O! It's also a good idea to wear a hat and sunscreen.
Like the
Ayers Rock climb,
if temperatures are forecast to exceed 36 degrees Celsius for the day - the trail is then closed off by 11am. You can still walk to the first lookout (Karu Lookout), but that's as far as you can go.
To avoid being disappointed - we advise to venture out as early as possible in the day. It's also easier to enjoy these unique surroundings when the temperature is more comfortable.
Kata Tjuta - Walpa Gorge Trail
This 2 kilometre trail takes you into one of the most beautiful gorges within Kata Tjuta. Everyone can enjoy this walk! And because it's a relatively short distance - it can be done at any time during the day.
A guided tour through this area can also be arranged. Learn all about the unique flora and geology in the area by tour guides familiar with aboriginal customs and culture!
Kata Tjuta - Other Ways to See The Olgas
Camel Rides are a thrilling way to explore Kata Tjuta and Ayers Rock! Rides are generally organized either in the morning during sunrise, or in the evening at sunset. This way, you not only get to enjoy the ride, but also the stunning views as both the 'Olgas' and the 'Rock' put on a spectacular display of changing colours!
Helicopter Tours can be organized from Yulara - These tours provide a completely different perspective of both The Olgas and Ayers Rock! These stunning formations viewed from the air with the beauty of the surrounding red desert are something you'll remember for a lifetime!
Harley Davidson Rides are popular year round! We couldn’t help but notice how many adventure travelers took advantage of this type of tour!
If you know how to ride and have a license - you can venture out on your own on a self-guided tour. If not, you can hook up with a guide, who'll take you wherever you want! Tour length can range anywhere from a half-hour to a full day.
When planning to visit Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park - remember that there's a lot more to see here than just Ayers Rock! The Olgas are a "must see" along with other unique and interesting vistas!
Taking time to learn and explore when visiting this Aboriginal homeland will only add to a very rewarding and exciting adventure vacation!
