Planning a Nova Scotia Walking Tour
Nova Scotia is a popular destination for hiking and walking adventures. It offers some of the best coastal and wilderness hiking trails in Canada!
For those who like to be active on vacation, the province has many scenic places to explore - from rugged coastal areas to the beautiful Cape Breton Highlands. Also, many of the Parks within the province contain well-marked trails that all can enjoy, whether you're a novice or experienced hiker!
Most Nova Scotia walking tours take advantage of the province's spectacular coastline! It's here that you can enjoy stunning sheltered coves, towering seacliffs and fascinating fishing villages.
Here's some places we recommend:
South Shore Hiking Trails
Hiking along the south shore of Nova Scotia enables you to explore historic shipbuilding communities along with established fishing outposts!
Most trails in this area are well groomed and are great for all ages. Highlights include Lunenberg, a UNESCO World Heritage Town, and of course, Peggy's Cove! Ovens Natural Park (Admission charged - Open May 15 to Oct 15) includes dramatic cliff top trails and rugged coastline viewing.
Cape Breton Highlands National Park
This Park is a must-see! 26 trails here in one of Canada's most spectacular wilderness areas.
It has many impressive short hikes that families can enjoy, including beach walks. There are also more advanced hiking expeditions through mountain and coastal landscapes.
Many trails are full of wildlife and offer outstanding views of the Cabot Trail and Gulf of St. Lawrence. Picturesque seaside trails and summits, make this area a hiker's delight!
Five Islands Provincial Park
Red Head Trail is a wide trail with footbridges and a well maintained fenceline. It has many lookouts over the Minas Basin and offers outstanding views of Red Head Point and the steep cliffs that make up this area. This hike is rated "moderate", and is approximately 4.5 kilometres long.
The Estuary Trail looks out over the tidal flats which spill out into the Minas Basin and provides great views of the East River. This 4 kilometre loop is rated as "easy".
Bay of Fundy
Walking and hiking along the rugged shores of the Bay of Fundy allows you to view some of the highest tides in the world, while enjoying the beautiful panoramic vistas of Nova Scotia's coastline.
Here you can walk along the ocean's floor during low tide! Or, try hiking through nearby old-growth forests in Cape Chignecto Provincial Park. Lookouts offer surreal views of the famous Bay from some of the highest cliffs in Nova Scotia!
Groomed trails and wooden bridges help you to navigate some of the deep gorges in this area.
Nova Scotia Hiking and Walking Tours - Best Time to Go
Nova Scotia walking tours are best enjoyed in the summer months. Spring time and Fall are enjoyable as well, although some trails may be wet and muddy following an extreme winter season.
Accommodations tend to be cheaper before and after the busy summer months of June and July.
Many tour operators suggest iteneraries at the end of September, as this is when the fall foliage changes. This is the perfect time to enjoy a Nova Scotia walking tour!
Whether hiking on your own, or hooking up with one of the many walking tours available in Nova Scotia, we're sure you'll enjoy discovering what this province has to offer!
