Patagonia is an outdoor wonderland of sights, sounds, and adventure activities. It's hard to compare this part of the world with any other area. And because the Patagonia landscape lies between Chile and Argentina, its diversity and extremes deserve a more thorough look.

Without a doubt, two of the most spectacular sights to see on a Patagonia adventure vacation are the Moreno Glacier in Argentina and Torres del Paine in Chile. But there's so much more...

On our page here - we focus on some of the best outdoor activities you can experience in Patagonia (on both the Argentina side and Chile side), and we'll look at some of the latest hotspots for adventure travel.

Patagonia Adventure Vacation - Outdoor Travel Destinations & Tours

Argentina's Lake District: Stay in Bariloche to get the most out of the area. You can pretty much do it all from here, and you'll experience some of the most stunning scenery around. Crystal clear lakes and snow-capped mountain vistas make this area ideal for hikers and cyclists. Top adventures include:
  • Mountain biking and hiking in San Martin, Nahuel Huapi National Park and around Lanin Volcano.
  • Zip lining and paragliding at Mt. Cathedral and Mt. Cerro.
  • Horseback riding around Cascada Mallin Ahogado.
  • Kayaking, canoeing and whitewater rafting from November through May
If you have a car, we highly recommend driving the 100 kilometer section of the Seven Lakes Route from Villa Angostura to San Martin de los Andes. You'll find adventure scenery at its best!

Chilean Lake District: This is the area that most Chileans go for holidays. The Pan American highway (toll road) that runs through the area and will get you close to what you want to see and do. There's excellent kayaking, hiking, cycling and whitewater rafting in the summer. And the winter brings skiers and snowboarders in from all over. Some great Patagonia adventure vacation areas are:
  • Pucon: Located close to national parks, rivers, lakes and wilderness areas, it's the number one area to find a variety of adventure activities. The Huerquehue and Conguillio National Parks are top-rated places to hike and bike. And the nearby Trancura River is excellent for kayaking.

  • Puerto Varas: Try whitewater rafting on the Petrohue River, or hike and bike around the very scenic Cochamo Valley! If you're into horseback riding and mountain climbing - you can book with an outfitter in town to explore the mass of granite mountain faces around here.

When To Go
December to March It’s the holiday season for summer travel, but if you want to get in as much adventure as you can, go in February or March. Prices drop in the off-season months (June - October), and the weather is windy and rainy.

Patagonia's Atlantic Coast (Argentina): Wildlife viewing is the big attraction here. Nature lovers and enthusiasts can find a number of different tours and excursions that showcase the marine wildlife in the area, namely penguins and whales. Patagonia's east coast is also THE place to go for scuba diving! Check out these exciting adventure towns and activities:
  • Puerto Madryn: From town you can arrange biking and horseback riding tours. You can also plan a scuba diving trip off the coast in Golfo Nuevo. You can also find great sea kayaking around the Valdes peninsula (Peninsula Valdes).

  • Puerto Piramides: Located on Peninsula Valdes (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) head north to Punta Norte for sea-lion and whale viewing.

When To Go

Chile's Southern Coast and Tierra del Fuego: There are some awesome adventures to do here in one of the remotest areas of the world. If you'd like to explore beautiful fjords and scenic glaciers, then you won’t want to miss a cruise along the Strait of Magellan which connects Ushuaia in Argentina to Punta Arenas in Chile. Adventure activities include:
  • Extreme (Class V) whitewater rafting along the Futaleufu
  • River as well as kayaking and paddling options
  • Sea-kayaking around Chiloe Island
  • Visit the Magellanic penguins along Magdalena Island
  • Mountain bike and hike scenic Tierra del Fuego National Park

There are well established accommodations in and around Tierra del Fuego:

  • Punta Arenas: Like Ushuaia in Argentina, you can depart from here on an Antarctica cruise. So there are a number of places to stay from budget accommodations to 5 star hotels.

  • Puerto Natales: Located about 80 kilometers to the south of Torres del Paine National Park - this is a great starting point to see and experience the 'ultimate Patagonia scenery'! Stay in town or book into an all-inclusive resort close to the National Park.

When To Go
November to March It’s the busy season from late spring through to the summer months, so expect to pay a little more for accommodations and activities. Also, travel from March to May is an excellent time to go and you'll still enjoy fine weather and a break on prices.

Patagonia Adventure Vacation - What to Pack

Traveling on a Patagonia adventure vacation will require a little more planning than your average holiday. You will need to pack for all seasons no matter what time of year you go. It’s a good idea to pack layers of clothing and a comfortable pair of hiking boots.

You can hire or rent mountain bikes, kayaks and other outdoor gear wherever there are adventure activities, so unless you like to travel with all your gear, it’s not necessary to do so here!
