Looking for polar bears? Churchill, Manitoba is the Polar Bear Captial of the World!

This is THE place to start your polar bear viewing adventure! In fact, much of the tourism in this area involves wildlife!

It's not hard to see why, as Churchill's location on the western shores of Hudson Bay, make it ideal for polar bear viewing in October and November.

This is when hundreds of polar bears start to migrate over the surrounding tundra towards the frozen ice of the Bay to hunt for food.

This is the best time to see numerous polar bears in their natural habitat!

How to see Polar Bears - When to Go

The best time to see polar bears in Churchill would be from October to Mid-December. Polar bear watching trips are very popular at this time of year, and it is important to book well in advance.

Tour companies usually offer excursions using special tundra vehicles. It can be anything from a converted bus to a tundra buggy. This is the safest way to see polar bears and allows you to view them up close!

Most tour operators based in Churchill will often seek out polar bears, as it is sometimes hard to predict where groups of bears may be. Alot depends on the location where ice is forming on the Bay!

Some polar bear watching excursions can involve walking tours during the summer months, and also at the height of 'Bear' season!

From Churchill, a variety of tours can be taken. For example, you can base yourself in town, and venture out to the arctic terrain, and nearby Wapusk National Park on day trips.

Or if you wish to maximize your polar bear viewing time - you can stay overnight on the tundra in an immobilised tundra vehicle. This is one of the best options, as it also enables you to see the northern lights! (Viewable in this area over 300 nights/per year)

What to take with you

During the fall season, the weather can change very quickly, so it's a good idea to dress in layers. This will allow you to adapt easily to different conditions.

Out on the tundra, close to the Hudson shoreline, the weather can become quite cold and often windy. If visiting during the summer months, you'll find that the temperature drops down late in the day, so it's always good to be prepared.

To enjoy a polar bear tour, don't leave home without:

  • A warm winter jacket or a parka with a hood
  • A toque or warm wool hat
  • Thin shirts and sweaters which you can layer
  • Waterproof and Wind-resistant Pants (Ski pants are great)
