Scuba Dive in Belize on the Best Islands and Reefs
Scuba Dive in Belize - Barrier Reef Locations for Diving and Snorkeling
Belize is one of the best places to scuba dive in Central America. The waters are always warm, averaging around 80 degrees Fahrenheit year round, and the visibility is outstanding (usually over 100 feet).
And because the waters are extremely calm along the reef, it’s the perfect place to snorkel as well. The barrier reef is the main draw for adventure travelers and visitors to Belize, and is only a short distance off shore.
You can arrange day trips out to the reef from both Belize City and Ambergris Caye. If you have the money, another option is to stay aboard a dive boat right on the reef. This type of tour is for more experienced scuba divers, and you’ll visit more 'out of the way' reef locations.
There are literally hundreds of places to stay, from mainland accommodations to island resorts.
Best Places to Scuba Dive in Belize
One of the best areas for scuba diving in Belize is around the islands scattered alongside the coast. These islands known as cayes are excellent places to base yourself so you can explore the nearby barrier reef. Some of the most popular Belize Cayes are:
Ambergris Caye: From San Pedro you can organize scuba diving and snorkeling trips. You'll find at least 60 different dive operators on Ambergris, and some of the larger resorts operate their own diving schools and tours. Full day tours out to the Blue Hole on Lighthouse Reef leave daily at 5am in the morning.
Caye Caulker: If you're looking for quiet relaxation, this is the place to go. Again, there are plenty of dive shops and tour operators to help you find that perfect dive location in Belize. You can also book a day trip out to the Blue Hole from here, as well as to other dive locations like the Turneffe Islands.
Caye Chapel: Small, but unforgettable! All available land is taken up by a landing strip and golf course. Fly in, play a round of golf and don't forget to organize a coral reef excursion from the beautiful Caye Chapel Island Resort.
Turneffe Islands: Divers will find excellent underwater drop-offs in the ocean around the Islands, and snorkelers can try out the shallow central lagoon on the island and inside the reef.
Lighthouse Reef Lagoon: One of Belize's top attractions and destinations is the spectacular Blue Hole. Scuba divers and snorkelers come from all over the world to experience this natural wonder.
