Top Locations to Scuba Dive in Cuba

Scuba Dive in Cuba - Popular and 'Out of the Way' Spots

Custom Search

Because Cuba stands on a large coral reef, this Caribbean island is one of the best places to try scuba diving!

The Cuban archipelago draws thousands of suba divers year round, and is well known for mild tides and no strong currents.

As well, Cuba enjoys a warm annual temperature above 73 Farenheit, which make the waters around the island ideal not only for surface snorkellers, but also challenge-driven scuba divers!

Below we list the TOP 5 areas to consider when planning a scuba diving vacation in Cuba:

Best Places to Scuba Dive in Cuba

Cayo Levisa - About 1 hour west of Havana, you'll find this beautiful offshore key located on Cuba's northwest shore.

Here you can explore centuries-old wrecks as well as stunning coral and medium to large tropical fish.

There are no currents here to worry about and visibility is usually very good at about 30 meters.

Playa Giron - On Cuba's south shore, located east of the Bay of Pigs is one of the best places to dive for beginners and experts. Playa Giron is about 2 hours from Varadero and offers excellent shelf diving and deep cave expeditions.

All of the dive locations are less the 250 feet from the shore. There are also plenty of shallow areas for novice divers.

Cayo Largo - You'll need to take a domestic flight out of Havana to experience the untouched beauty of the coral reefs located just out of Playa Sirena.

The barrier reef is just 2 miles offshore and is protected well from the rough seas surrounding it. Also the water temperature tends to be warmer here than anywhere else in Cuba.

Cienfuegos - On Cuba's southside, the city of Cienfuegos is a great place to base yourself. There are over 28 dive sites located in the area. The waters around here are crystal clear, and contain some of the most spectacular coral formations in Cuba.

The Faro de Luna Diving Center is the place for underwater enthusiasts and has shipwrecks and coral formation barriers. It's approximately 4 hours by road from Havana to Cienfuegos.

Maria la Gorda - This is a remote and beautiful location on the westernmost part of Cuba. Great diving can be enjoyed here year-round.

As a world biosphere preserve, located within the Guanahacabibes Peninsula, there are two spectacular dive zones featuring black coral walls and 18th century wrecks. And due to it's location within the peninsula, there are virtually no currents to worry about.

Havana to Maria la Gorda takes about 4 hours by bus or car.
