Whale watching tours can be arranged from almost every coastal centre in British Columbia. In Vancouver, Sea Breeze Adventures out of Steveston Village in Richmond has whale watching tours along the Fraser River Estuary.

Vancouver Whale Watch also based out of Richmond, offers 3 to 5 hour excursions on open or semi-covered zodiacs throughout the Gulf Islands

For sure, the best whale watching tours are on Vancouver Island. There are a lot of cruises to choose from in Victoria. You can decide for yourself to take either a zodiac or an enclosed boat from a variety of tours that depart from Victoria's Inner Harbour.

The most memorable and spectacular whale watching venues are on the west coast of Vancouver Island in the small communities of Tofino and Ucluelet.

Whale Watching in BC - What to Expect

Quite simply - expect to be blown away! Whale watching is one of the most exhilarating experiences that anyone can enjoy. Whether you're young or old - you'll never forget the thrill of seeing these massive creatures up close.

Not sure what to take on a whale watching tour! Always make sure to bring:

  • Clothing that can be layered - like a sweater, pullover, or windbreaker.

  • Sunglasses and sunscreen.

  • A Camera with a strap and a bag to protect it from the water.

  • Hiking boots or a runner type shoe.

  • Anti-nauseant medication like 'Gravol' or motion sickness patches.

Most operators will advise you on what the water conditions are like prior to departure. And they can also advise you on what type of tour is best for you.

It might be an all-enclosed/covered vessel or a high speed 'out in the open' zodiac! Both are great for getting up close to killer whales and other marine life!


Whale Watching in BC - When to Go

Whale watching can be done throughout the year; however there are months where viewing Orcas, Humpbacks, and Greys are at its peak!

The best time to see whales in British Columbia, is from April to October. The summer months are very busy as tourists and travelers come to the Province to not only whale watch, but also to cycle, hike, and whitewater raft.

So to make sure you don't miss out on seeing whales when you're in BC - always reserve a tour in advance!
